The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) created the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to help address these issues. EQIP is a voluntary Farm Bill program that provides financial and technical assistance to both support agricultural producers and encourage environmental stewardship. This program provides an opportunity for farmers looking to implement sustainable practices – like building an Accu-Steel structure. However, navigating the complexities of EQIP can be daunting. The lot was adjacent to a creek, and every rainfall resulted in dirt washing into the waterway. “Through the EQIP application process, the producer received funding to both construct an Accu-Steel cattle building and transform the lot into a grass pasture. This not only immediately eliminated the mud runoff but also significantly reduced odor complaints, improved the site’s air quality, and protected the cattle from weather elements,” said Justin. By providing cost-effective solutions for livestock operations, Accu-Steel buildings not only help producers meet environmental goals, but protect livestock from extreme year-round weather – ultimately enhancing the resilience and efficiency of agricultural operations.

Advice for EQIP Application Process

While the benefits of EQIP are clear, navigating the application process can be intimidating – making ProAg a valuable resource. By fostering strong relationships with NRCS and local offices, ProAg helps keep producers engaged and informed, which is essential for the program’s success. “Despite the red tape, it’s worth it,” Justin asserts. “We’re here to alleviate the headaches and guide producers through the application process, ensuring a smoother experience.” Transparency is crucial in identifying issues that may need attention, allowing the NRCS to provide tailored technical and financial assistance. Justin encourages producers to be open about their operations when applying for EQIP: “NRCS is not an enforcement agency. They’re there to offer advice and help address problems that cannot be fixed on your own.”
