Accu-Steel Sponsors Informational Meeting About Environmental Regulations
Dairy and cattle operators from Eastern Iowa attended an Accu-Steel-sponsored informational session March 21-22 where they learned more about how environmental regulations and inspections could impact their operations. The event was hosted by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Beef Center, and Iowa State University, and covered a variety of environmental topics that could affect operator practices and revenue.
Keynote speakers included Gene Tinker and Bill Ehm with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, as well as Stephen Pollard with the Environmental Protection Agency, who covered the topic of fly-overs, inspections, and environmental compliance. Justine Stevenson from Iowa Cattlemen’s Association provided updates on policy and administration for the association, as well as upcoming association initiatives.
High feed costs are causing many producers to evaluate additional feedstock options to reduce inputs; Dr. Dan Loy with Iowa State University discussed the current use of alkali treatment to increase digestibility and value of corn stalks in cattle rations. The forum also featured Iowa State University Extension engineers and beef specialists who discussed management practices that can be implemented to help producers navigate the possibility of another hot, dry, summer.
